This page documents how NCSU Libraries use the  Sirsi-Dynix Bound-with Feature.

Background

The Bound-with feature links bibliographic and call number/item records in a parent-child relationship. Bibliographic records are parents; call number records are children. The call number children record inherits its bibliographic parent record's item-level details, most commonly: location, call number and availability status (i.e. available, checked out, lost, etc.). Any data stored at the item level is transferred to the child.

  • Parent records have a one to many relationship: a parent record can have many children
  • Child records may only have a single parent

Bound-with Example

Currently NCSU Libraries use the Bound-with feature for its intended purpose: to bring together data about titles that are bound in a single unit. Previously we used the Bound-with feature in cataloging our Kindle eBook Collection, information about this follows.

Bound-with allows us to make two bibliographic records available in our online catalog for discovery, with the child record, or the record bound-with the parent, displaying the parent's location, call number and availablity status.

?Parent Bibliographic Record

Parent Call Number/Item Record

As the parent record, this record:

  • Contains both a call number and item record
  • Is controlling the call number and item properties for all children call number/item records (i.e. call number, item type, availablity status, location, etc.)

Parent Bound-with Information Tab
  • This information tab details the Bound-with parent-child relationships.

Child Record: Zur Kenntnis der Azole

NCSU Libraries Online Catalog: http://catalog.lib.ncsu.edu/record/NCSU1518833

  • Bibliographic record is available for discovery and display
  • Location, Call Number and Availability are being inherited from the parent record, "Über geschlossene Kurven (n + 1)-ter Ordnung im Kn mit einer Anwendung auf ebene Kurven der konischen Ordnung 5 und 6"

Child Bibliographic Record

Child Call Number Record

As a child record, this record:

  • Uses a call number record, linked to a bibliographic record. There is no item record.
  • Is inheriting its call number and item properties from the parent call number and item record (i.e. call number, item type, availablity status, location, etc.)

NCSU Libraries Kindle eBook Collection

Prior to September 2011, NCSU Libraries used the Bound-with feature to catalog our Kindle eBook Collection. When we stopped this practice, we removed all bound-with links for these resources from the system. Historical documentation is still available for this process for those who might be interested:

Please bear in mind that these pages are no longer updated. Links to the NCSU Online Catalog will no longer illustrate the Bound-with feature in action for our Kindle eBook Collection.
