NOTE: While some of these criteria can apply to serials cataloging, they are written for monographic cataloging. For serials-specific MARC guidance, see Serials Copy Cataloging Criteria.
Also, see MARC Fields to Remove from Copy.
Please check OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards for additional information about these fields.
Please see Assigning a Location to General Collection Materials for additional information about selecting the correct location for items cataloged.

It is now optional for catalogers to enter their initials in 049 to identify their participation in editing a record. You might wish to exercise this option if, for example, you wish to be able to retrieve items you have recently cataloged. 049 is an indexed field and can be used for retrieval purposes. If you are using this option, please do not erase other people's initials if they are present. Simply add your initials at the end of 049 in a new |x. A keyword search for your initials can be combined with other record attributes (publisher, "rda" from 040, location, etc.) to pinpoint particular groupings of records. | X
Single, complete call number and/or a complete 050 00. 055 (LC call number assigned by Canadian library) may also be used, except in the case of Canadian literature, where Library Archives Canada uses special extended PS schedules (PS8000+) rather than LC's preferred PR9000+. | X
Multiple/conflicting call number fields, no call number fields, multiple |a’s (usually separate numbers for classed as series vs. classed by topic) in a call number, or PZ call number in a non-LRL record. | X

33X fields are acceptable in AACR2 and RDA records. NCSU follows national policy and accepts AACR2 records with 33X fields, but you only need to add them to RDA records if they are not present. ‡a and ‡2 are required. ‡b is not required, but OCLC wants it in WorldCat records, so we will supply it if it is not present. There is an OCLC macro that will create these fields for you. In Connexion, go to Tools > User Tools > Assign and select "Macro", then "OCLC!Add33x", then click "Assign Tool". For basic monographic copy, use the inputs in the screen shot below. | X

A monthly Sirsi report should automatically delete any 856s pointing to tables of contents, summaries, and publisher descriptions within the loc.gov domain. No need to manually delete these. | X | X |
