In March 2012, NCSU began a participation with The Open Library NC Project which is being coordinated by NCLive. The Open Library NC Project is a collaboration between the Internet Archive and NC LIVE. Because of this collaboration, all of North Carolina has access to a large-scale shared downloadable eBook collection called the Open Library eBook Lending Collection. The eBooks in this collection are digital scans of books contributed by libraries around the country. The Open Library NC Project has already given patrons full access to the Open Library eBook Lending Collection, which includes over 100,000 eBooks of in-copyright works published from 1923-1999, as well as over one million public domain titles and a small collection of more recent (2000-2011) titles.

For the first phase of this project, NCSU is providing 10 books for digitization. The titles were chosen by Collection Management. All copies sent to Internet Archive are copy 2 or 3 and will be archived by IA after digitization. The books will not be returned to NCSU. Once the books are digitzed and added to Internet Archive, the ebook versions will be cataloged.

In November 2013, NCLive informed the Libraries the 10 donated print books were digitized and available in Internet Archive. A&D cataloged the ebooks adding a 590 note (see below). 

Policy
  • 590 Note: NCSU library copy included in the Open Library Lending Library Collection.

Access and 856 Field

  • Open Library NC titles are not open source. Only libraries participating in the program can 'borrow' books, which works like ILL.
  • Current EZProxy version does not support Internet Archive's borrow functionality (11/20/13 cpa). Open Library NC books can only be 'borrowed' from an on-campus computer (i.e. on a computer within the Libraries IP address range)
  • Add proxy address even though current version does not support functionality to avoid confusion re: no proxy address in 856 $u but Itemcat 2 is not set to OPENACCESS.
  • $z = Open Library Lending Library Collection
Procedure
  1. Collection Managment (contact: Orion) sends list of titles to be withdrawn to A&D (contact: Christee)
  2. A&D withdraws titles
    1. Physical books will not be sent to A&D for withdraw. Books will not be stamped or otherwise marked withdrawn, which for digitization is undesirable.
  3. Collection Managment sends books to NCLive (contact: Heather), who will forward the books to Internet Archive for digitization and archiving
  4. NCLive will alert CM and/or A&D when electronic versions are available through The Open Library
  5. A&D catalog ebook versions
